I'm going to be disappearing from the radar for a little while. (We have a goodbye thread but no au revoir thread so I'll pop this here...)

Indeed I'm going to be disappearing from the Northern Hemisphere until the middle of August. Originally it was going to be just a holiday in Melbourne with a Messiaen concert at the end but another three concerts and a workshop ambushed me when I wasn't looking. Which lessens the family contact time a bit but pays the airfare.

Normally it sucks somewhat to sit in a plane for 24 hours but this time I will have the very great pleasure of being accompanied by a 5' 1 1/2" French cellist (the one with a diploma in apiculture) and her cello. So not only will I have someone to talk to but there will be no one else in our row. That should soften the blow quite a bit.

I'll probably pop up again from time to time once I'm out of the plane anyway...

Anyway. Suitcase time. See you all again soon. Kiss

This is all very distressing for hooooooooning enthusiasts in the northern hemisphere but here's wishing you an enjoyable and productive time, Mr S.

Smiley My Year 3's Optional Tests in Maths results weren't as bad as I'd feared they would be! The better ones are aiming for a Level 3 in Year 3 - and 6 of them got it! Another was only one point off. It's a small Year 3 cohort of only 15 children in a deprived area, (with 1 statemented for learning and another will be soon), so that's pretty good! Still haven't finished the English tests...I'm not very optimistic about those. I've taught these Y3s for 3 years now (unusual but couldn't be helped) so I'm pleased that they appear to have learned something!

Thanks Martle. Kiss Perhaps I should add that a couple of the better Y3s are particularly good at maths so I'm lucky having some with mathematical brains - they're quicker than I was at that age. In fact, some days they're quicker than I am now! One of them told me his mum's good at numbers - cos she does the bingo!

Seeing one's young(er, normally) charges get through their tests at any level is surely the best thing about teaching, at any level. I may have already gushed about this, but seeing so many of our recent university finalists coming out with very, very good results makes me very, very happy and swells the old heart with pride for those one has personally supervised. After all, I've known these people for three years, seen them grow, struggle, overcome diffuculties, rise to the challenges... immensely fulfilling.  Smiley

Well done to you martle - yours are under a lot more pressure to do well. I dislike having to put children of 6-8 through tests - I know what level they are or at least are working at. It's satisfying to have this confirmed by proper, serious, official Government tests BUT it's not nice having to put them through it. Especially that mental maths test today with an anonymous woman's voice on a tape and 5 seconds to answer the questions... Shocked you should have seen their worried little faces!

In education, at all levels, the people involved in  studying as opposed to the teachers themsevels, seem to be a lot more pressure these days than say a decade agp.
