Went shopping and came back with two pumpkins, some garlic, cabbage, bread, cream and cod. That made me very happy.
I'm going to put on some Monteverdi madrigals (fifth book) soon too.
Despite the fact that I felt quite morose yesterday, I'm feeling quite weightless today.

My Tesco delivery arrived, no substitutions and some of the nicest leeks I have seen for a while and the store cupboard is now fully stocked

hh, could you tell us on the Burning Thread what you intend doing this week with the pumpkins or will it be what you did last week?

What sort of pumpkins? As I said on the Burning thread recently, mine tasted vile. I was so disappointed.

Was Tesco on time, Anty, as well as with no substitutions?

Mary, it was booked for the 12.00-2.00 slot and arrived 12.20 which is about average - sometimes they have been prior to the slot but always phone first  (I don't use them a lot but I needed to stock up with things like laundry products, tinned toms, various types of beans, pasta, etc., and they are a lot cheaper than the supermarkets here for those items)  They have to travel 17 miles to get to me so perhaps I am always top of the list on their route?  They logically would serve the nearest first I expect.

I wouldn't normally use them for vegetables, preferring to choose my own, but due to work pressure yesterday had no time to shop and am delighted at the quality of the leeks and sprouts.

In what way was your pumpkin vile?

It was one of those pumpkins Tesco labels "culinary" as opposed to "carving", but looked just like the Hallowe'en ones. I hadn't cooked that sort before. I cut it into wedges and roasted it, and the flavour was just very unpleasant. Hard to describe, but horrible. I didn't eat the rest.

The only time I have bought pumpkin (and it's only been a couple of times I must confess) it has been the very small ones which are not much bigger than a large swede.  I didn't realise there were culinary and carving varieties.

I think hh is our resident pumpkin expert!!  Smiley

Not really. I've only cooked it a couple of times!
With the last one, all I had to do was cut it in half, drizzle each half with oil and then roast, cut side down until they looked nommy.
It's probably worth taking the seeds out before you cook them (though I didn't last time) and either discarding them, or toasting them.

On a happy note, I've just finally located my tenancy agreement under a pile of scores.
It confirms that my agent will arrange for the washing machine to be fixed.
A shame it's taken me two weeks to find this so that I can feel fully justified in phoning my agent on Monday...
By which time I'll have nearly run out of clean shirts.

I'm not sure about this culinary vs carving distinction - the only difference I can see is in the size, and I suspect that's part of the problem.  Both are bigger than the sort of pumpkin we get through our veg box scheme, which has plenty of flavour.

Good on Mrs bbm.

I have not got a TV, but I heard the Abbot of Worth on the Moral Maze on Radio 4, holding his own with Melanie Phillips.

I have every respect for the Order of Saint Benedict.
