The ties that bind

BTW, DB, thew Abbot has a new book out called 'Finding Happiness. Sounds like a sequel to 'Finding Sanctuary', which was quite an interesting, straight forward read.

Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

First rehearsal of new madrigal choir today. Some fairly ropey intonation and sight-singing, but who cares? It actually happened!
Fine tuning of the ensemble is due over the next few weeks, with some tutti madrigals, and plenty of 1 voice to a part.

Concert at lunchtime by colleagues, which made my rib cage vibrate, in a good way.

Just seen that there's not just a Rambert tour coming up here next month, but also the Richard Alston company are touring here.

We're hosting an accordion orchestra concert on Friday, and I've been worried that no-one's going to come, but I've had what feels like an avalanche of volunteers to help me out on the door etc.! Even if only these students come along, I'll feel better about it!

And I've got pear crumble for pudding!

Yay!

Madrigals, I love madrigals. I've only sung English ones. I'm so glad people are still singing them, ropey intonation or not (though preferably not).

hh, I've just learned that, after years of only attracting about 15 students to our 'chamber choir', this year 140 have signed on. It's going to have to become a 'chorus' pretty quickly! And sod the madrigals: bring on Carmina.  Grin Trouble is, I'm responsible for co-ordinating it all (although not conducting it). Yikes!  Shocked

That's reminded me of my days singing in Mads - the Elizabethan Madrigal Singers in Aberystwyth. Our conductor, Royston Harvard* (anyone here know him?) was so strict he'd glare at you if he heard you breathe! The standard was extremely high but we sometimes performed to just a handful of people in freezing cold churches. I was very nervous of making a mistake as you're very exposed in a group like that.

*I googled him and found that he'd played the organ for the Gwent Bach Choir in Abergavenny in 1957. I also found my singing teacher Hazel Holt and violin teacher Leonard James listed in concerts there in the 60's - I know that tp knew dear old Bill James (he was never known as Leonard) when she lived in Aberystwyth but he died a while ago. Fond memories of lessons with him although I was a terrible violinist!

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

That's nice.  Rob just read out my email about music that inspires during adversity.  We were playing chess in the kitchen and the little 'un was delighted to hear it.  He still won incidentally.  We played three games and he won all three.  Embarrassed

I heard it too, on the way into work - congratulations Milly! Thanks for bringing a smile to my face for the first time all day (even while stuck in traffic).  Smiley

Sorry BBM, didn't look at the time because we were deep into a game of chess.  I would guess at between 9 and 9.30 but not sure.

So will I.

I'm going to WNO Jenufa tonight. Not sure how happy that will be - it must be the most horrible story in opera. Still, I've never seen it, and have wanted to for a long time.

It would have been somewhere between quarter to and ten to nine BBM - I was half way up the hill just past the traffic lights and I got into work at 9.  Smiley

Isn't it funny how you remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard particular snippets on the radio?  Sometimes the other half and I will listen to re-runs of something like the News Quiz on R4 and one of us will say "Just turning off onto the A57" so the other says "chopping onions and being pestered by the cat".  Cheesy

I have just received the best news that I have heard all year. Our ghastly hospice manager who has made the lives of so many staff miserable, who has harried and bullied people out of their jobs over the last four years, IS LEAVING!!! I don't know why and, at this moment, I don't care. She's leaving and that is a wonderful thing. There'll be dancing in the wards when this is officially announced.

That is good news - glad to hear it Mort.  It's a pity she won't be vapourised and restore everyone mysteriously back to their original jobs like in Doctor Who.  Still, it's a start.  Smiley
