Is there no end to the idiocy over there? I've just had a look.

Idiotic, yes.  But also logical from the point of view of the outsourced jobsworth ...

It's quite simple.  Somewhere there is a rule that says "no mentions of live concerts on the boards".  No judgement needed or required - so the Mod can wield the stick, claim s/he is doing the job, and get paid.

But a post slagging off another member, say, is a different matter.  It involves judgement and discretion.  Therefore it is more difficult, and there is always a rationale for doing nothing, while being able to claim that, for example, one is promoting vigorous debate and defending free speech.  Hence, even when doing nothing, and avoiding a decision, the Mod can claim that s/he is doing the job, and get paid.

Of course, the older-fashioned kind of Mod who knows and cares and makes an effort is no longer viable in the output-driven resource-accounted, key-performance-indicated world ...

This cynical view of what is happening at TOP is of course entirely unrelated to any experience I might have had of managing consultants ......

No but even if you had, you could do it at any time at all just to make a statement - you know turn everything off for an hour or so.  I shall do it just to show solidarity.  Wink

I've managed to turn off my vcr by mistake so rather than retuning it and resetting the clock, I'll follow sooty and switch all off tonight.

Well, I will turn off tonight as well.  Or did I mean tune in turn on and drop out?  Cheesy

I only ever have one uplighter switched on if I am in The West Wing and if in The East Wing my Ikea table light with energy saving bulb.  I just don't see why my and Mort's carbon footprint is bigger than John Wright's?  Huh  I consider myself very green and recycle everything.

Last time most of the lights were turned off here (other than at night) I was burgled, so I'm not joining in. Sorry! I leave lights on when I'm out, too.

However, I don't think I use a lot of electricity generally. I don't have a car either, so I'm quite good, really.

I use a lot of electricity. My washing machines and driers are on every day, I wash bedding and towels at 60 degs and I drive a 3-litre engine car.  Unfortunately I don't have any light fittings at all that have only one bulb.  In fact. I have chandeliers in the downstairs rooms and on the landing. Even here in the study now, working on my computer, the light fitting in the room has three 40 watt bulbs in it.  Energy-saving bulbs are all very well but they'd look awful on a crystal chandelier.  I buy bulbs from an electrical discount shop and they've told me that 40 watt candle bulbs are being phased out at the end of this year.  I hope they come up with an alternative that looks as nice. I've had low-energy halogen spots put in my main bathroom and in the kitchen, I usually work with just the downlights on, that are under the top cupboards.  They're small fluorescents so they're ok.

Whilst I feel very guilty about it all now, I do pay a lot for my electricity and rightly so.  Tonight between 8 and 9 my house is going to be entirely candle-lit, no radio or tv - nothing.

I recycle almost fanatically, separating everything into different sections but I've still got a long way to go to be truly "green".  Sad

I take your point about burglary because of the darkness Mary, but I shall rely on the dog to protect us.

Between 8 and 9 tonight I shall be instructing the servants to shut down the main generators in the outhouses and issuing them with a tot of rum to warm themselves with before they bed down in the hay. Oh, and I must remember to tell James to keep the helicopter grounded! For myself, I shall most likely retire to one of the smaller bedrooms with a candle or two and read some improving text before logging on here again at 9-ish to see how the hoi-poloi have got on.

Well I'm not sitting in the dark for an hour! I use low energy bulbs throughout the house, so turning them off is not going to save a lot, though I know that's not the point of the exercise. I don't have central heating so my electricity bills are pretty low as I only heat a room when it's being used. However my PC is on for hours on end, as I waste my time on r3ok, so I bet that uses lots of electicity Embarrassed

I've taken to buying bulbs online, from The Light Bulb Company based in Oxford. They have all sorts of obscure things. I use some candle bulbs too, can't remember what wattage offhand - perhaps I'll buy a large box of them before they disappear.
