I probably could have demanded that my landlord install one (surely this should be as standard as a fire alarm?) but I wanted to know now.
I've put it next to the boiler for the time being but I'll move it to each room in turn for a period.

Thing is, if you have your own, you just take it with you wherever you go.  Sound investment.  I agree they should be standard though.  They're not of course and I don't think there is a legal requirement.

I'm sure that this is just me being alarmist, but I think I'm buying a carbon monoxide detector for my flat tomorrow. Just in case it explains my recent lethargy and headaches... I'm sure this is just me being alarmist.

I did exactly the same a few years back. I only used the device a few times, but at least you know once you've used it if there's a problem, and if there isn't you can be relieved on that score at least, which is extremely worthwhile. It's a small price to pay really.

Teenager has finished work early and we're off to pick up the little one from school shortly.  Decided to pop into Preston to do some shopping and have tea there.

I tend more towards leaving an amount of time to get somewhere which would be optimistic if all the components of the journey were working perfectly and were seamlessly meshed with one another ...
Ah, a man like myself!! ... Indeed I tend so far in this direction that I often seem to leave venue X at a time which assumes the travelling distance between X and Y is zero.

On the rare occasions when I actually find myself ready to leave at, say, 7 o'clock for a 7.30 appointment at a venue 25 mins away - which is presumably what George and Mary do all the time - I often catch myself thinking: 'Oh no, I'll be early, I'd better find something to distract me for 10 mins' ... which invariably ends up taking 15 or 20 mins. Undecided

Exactly.

However it doesn't look as if I'm going to have to worry about calculating my journey time to St Pancras in order to get the 9.57 Eurostar on Sunday morning, does it?  Angry  I've never been in a situation like this before. Luckily the rehearsal schedule for next week is quite generous, so that arriving a day later wouldn't be a major disaster, and I've left the matter in the hands of the promoter. If they want me in Kortrijk on Sunday they'll probably have to buy a business-class ticket to fly to Brussels. (Flights between London and Brussels are, as member Wagnerite will confirm, an absolute ripoff given how short the journey is, because they can rely on a constant stream of suits with expense accounts.)

Hm, yes, as it happens I'm in Stuttgart and rehearsing tomorrow morning in Köln at 10.30. So do I take the 7.18 bus which gets to the Hauptbahnhof at 7.43 all going well to catch the 7.51 train which gets me to Köln at 10.05? Or do I get up at sparrow's fart to catch the 6.33 bus (there's nothing between the two) just to make sure?

On the other hand getting in to Köln at 11.05 wouldn't be a catastrophe since there are movements without me which they could do until I get there.

7.18 it is then.

I was just telling a youngster where we were playing from! he seemed a bit OTT anyway when he arrived. Transpired later that he could'nt finish an arrnagement he was doing for the band, as his wife was needing to use it!! So I think they mustv'e had a row and took it out on us. O well, such is life!

Hm. Good thing it wouldn't have been a catastrophe. No problem with the Nahverkehr in Stuttgart. The far cup occurred with the Fernverkehr. Train stopped in the middle of nowhere for 3/4 of an hour.

Oh well. I did what I could.

Anyone else notice how much the word Verkehr sounds like "f*** yeah"? No? Ah, I thought it might just be me.  Roll Eyes

Not difficult really, since I live in a time zone five hours later than the UK. (And can't Listen Again (pocket grump, now available for most models, not that I was ever in danger of being a model, unless it was for the Michelin-Man look))

I did say I thought it might just be me.

Am I also the only one who's surprised to walk into shops in Germany and have sales assistants relatively advanced in age and of perfectly respectable appearance say to him "yo, bitchin'"?

The Proms are over. There was a spider in the bath this morning. The holly berries are already red. It's definitely autumn.
