Several things I think Alison-when an upright bass was involved it was twanged hard, and you have guitar picks
plus the inebriated swoon of the pedal (aka hawaiian) guitar. Eons ago when my late Dad and I played together in a Brass Band in Dorset, for their annual dinner dance the band secretary booked in his innocence an ensemble called the Trembltones  featuring said instrument (fear and trembling indeed they brought forth) misprinted on the tickets as the Trembletoes, a lesser known condition among c and w sufferers). I think my inability to date to do
ballroom dancing stems from this minor trauma.

Well, I think it's a grand indication of the health of this MB that WL (a fine, fine song by anyone's standards) can be discussed without prejudice, despite Milly's sofa antics, and with the sort of searching intelligence that I've come to expect from you all.  Smiley

Offbeat

Yes thats how all this started.   There was an article in yesterdays Racing Post concerning the deplorable pronunciation of racehorse names including Wichita Lineman.  Definitely not Wi-cheater.

Clare Balding made a surprisingly awful stab at L'AMI as well.

I have followed Wichita Lineman since its first run.  Luckily I worked out that 4-6 was bad value was last week !

Ah so its the pedal guitar.  Awful.  No redeeming features.

Any use in classical music me wonders ?

Hi Offbeat

Of Course the REAL action starts at Newmarket tomorrow.

Do you follow the flat game as well ?   Sir Michael Stoute's runners will bear close examination in the next few days.  Cant wait ...

Ali, A friend and colleague of mine wrote a piece forBJ Cole who plays the thing musically and commissioned it-it took a lot of mutual working out, but a fine bit of work.

No redeeming features?  Shocked

In a pop song like Wichita Lineman it's not given any chance to show its redeeming features. It's not played so much as used as a "sound effect", which is a terrible waste of its abilities.

On hearing the shower scene "music" in Psycho, one might say "Violin. Awful. No redeeming features. Any use in classical music me wonders?"   Tongue

I've been to a handful of (non-classical) concerts which feature pedal steel guitar and it's a uniquely beautiful and melodic instrument when played "properly".

Hi Alison
Yes like flat also - find opening of turf season extremely tricky (good example today namely Sander Camillo) - to my eternal expense prefer handicaps to stakes races but find form study great mental therapy whether winning or losing -   its a great sport isnt it  Smiley

Yes, marvellous sport.  I had a good win on Arabian Gulf in the first (thanks Sir Michael).  Going again tomorrow.

Sander rather disappointing.  Kaseema for  the 1000 guineas at 25-1 for me.
