Ah so its the pedal guitar.  Awful.  No redeeming features.

Any use in classical music me wonders ?

Nonsense!  Pedal steel is one of the most wonderful and bizarre instruments I know.  And endlessly intricate in all its many variations.

And, yes, if my work counts as 'classical music,' (which it well might not), the pedal steel does indeed have a use, as a new pedal steel piece is on my docket (though, alas, for sometime in the distant-ish future ... it'll be 2-3 yrs b/f I'll be able to get to it, I think).

Also, I don't know the song that's being referenced in this thread, but .... any chance a "Wichita Lineman" refers to the (American) football position (and t/f describes someone who is particularly big/tall/strong)?

Sorry ... praising the pedal steel and making references to (American) football all in the same thread ... I'm showing my Texas roots.

I believe its Witch-it-a, as for Pat Metheny's album '...As Wichita falls, so falls Wichita'.

Wichita and Wichita Falls are two different places (in two different states) ... necessary knowledge to get the full extent of the joke.

Wichita = Kansas.  Wichita Falls = Texas.

re the pronunciation, I can't really vouch for Wichita, KS, but ... in Texas, it's pronounced something vaguely akin to "Wuh-chuh-TAW."  And "Falls" has two syllables.  ;-)  (I won't even attempt a phonetic version.)

And with all due respect to each city's chamber of commerce (do they have such things in England?), both cities are middle-of-nowhere backwaters.  ;-)

Thanks for this Aaron. I had a feeling there was more to this title than assonance.

Harking back to the song itself, I have just come across a very subtle rendition by guitarist Bobby Broom on his
album Song and Dance (U.S. jazz label:Origin)-contemporary and humane.

Hi Ali - hope you had a good two days racing - think this years 2000 was ultra competitive - i reduced it down to ten and still did not find Cockney Rebel -maybe Adagio will get compensation at Royal Ascot my favourite meeting of all the year (apart from Cheltenham)

I really hope  Authorised does the business for the splendid PCH.

Perhaps not a betting race now sadly.

And wont it be even more marvellous if Henry Cecil could win the Oaks !

Rather disappointing cards tomorrow.  Annoying when there was too much racing to keep track of last Thursday and Friday.
