There seem to be lots of operas by big names popping up: Chin, Saariaho, Benjamin to name but three recent culprits.
Chin's quite a small name, isn't it?

Not so small as Aho though.  Are there any opera-writers with shorter names still?

(i don't think richard got it btw)

I for one did not quite get it :/

Depends whether you're counting letters or syllables, I suppose ...

My friend Raymond Yiu wrote a music theatre work for Aldeburgh/Almeida last year. Tan Dun is even shorter. I'm sure there must be more ... the shortest composer surname I can think of is Ye (as in Xiaogang), but I don't know if he's written an opera, and I'm not 100% sure whether Ye is his surname or given name.

Oh, it's just a silly joke about GB saying 'gosh' (which he does quite a lot!).

I'm not sure what makes me think I know what I'm talking about, but I do (think I do): it's my impression that in Chinese names where one name is one syllable and the other two, that the one-syllable one is more often than not the family name. Which would mean that odds are that Ye is the winner, and I'm not sure who his competition could possibly be unless we are particularly forgiving about the genitive particles affixed to the name of Mr. van der Aa.

Sadly, I don't think Indonesian composer Nano S (a name that is small in more ways than one) has written any operas. Mostly songs and gamelan pieces.

That's exactly my impression too, Evan.

i had heard about an acute attack of the goshes during an ensemble modern rehearsal ( number of years ago, the stand-in bass player asked me in all seriousness if saying 'gosh' had anything to do with curry, i said yes), otherwise i don't and never had any personal contact -neither can we assume that richard is on first-name terms ... Sad - with geordie himself.
