I've just cancelled my membership on the Other Side so you won't be seeing me over there any more. Should anyone over there happen to have an urgent question for Ollie (and not have found this forum what with the links being constantly modded) feel free to pass it on here.

Damn, having trouble seeing the screen. I think I'll have to play my chalumeau for a bit until I cheer up.

 Cry

Wish I had a chalumeau.

Not that I could play it, but I wish I had one.

I suppose it wouldn't take long to learn how to play it? About a week, say?

Maybe two.

They - over there - have made a disgrace of themselves. Spiteful, petty minded vandalism. They are too petty minded (or were too petty minded, "Chris" appears not to be around today) to realise that the MBs were an unprecedent opportunity for exchanges of knowledge, information, opinion and ahem.

And why not ahem (although I could never stand that Sorel bloke. What a prat).

And if they have started to realise that, the damage has been done.

OK. Maybe it would take three weeks to learn to play the chalumeau. And a half.

Not sure if I can spare the time ....

If you can already play the clarinet and have played a bit of recorder then a couple of weeks will get you somewhere... Smiley

It is not as easy as you say ollie. I have a clarinet student that plays difficult pieces for his diploma, but so unsteady. Clarinet is a beautidul instrument and I love to hear a good clarinetist playing it.
He produces a lot of sqeaks from the instrument. I wish him well and he is a good young man. I just only tell you my opinion.

Oliver

Ignore me.

There's a wonderful anecdote somewhere by Flann O'Brien about an Irish Newspaper (presumably not the Irish Times) whose music critic for some reason or other couldn't make a piano recital to review it and which, for some reason or other, the paper needed to review.

(Presumably it was someone eminent. Probably Paderewski).

Anyway. The paper's music critic wrote a review before the concert and just in case eminent pianist died during the concert or was kidnapped or whatever the paper sent an elderly news reviewer to slumber through the thing. Alas, he stayed awake and flushed with enthusiasm penned his own review announcing that the performer was a fine one and "played with equal facility on the black as well as the white notes."

I'm off now to Sainsbury's to buy my dinner.

I hadn't realised that "Chris" is the Host of R2 MBs.  He was appointed to deal with all the trolls there.  I presume the R3 Host (who is nameless) called him in to quell the rebellion.

No threads have been modded or closed today and the R3 Host even joined in one of the off-topic discussions.  Maybe they have realised that it is impossible to link two MBs to two magazine programmes?  Maybe they will do what the 'Today' MB did and only let Hosts post the topics??  I suspect the latter is on the cards.

Ho Hum.  Whatever, they have made a right pigs ear of it and alienated a lot of people

As you say Anna, they obviously brought in a Radio 2 Rottweiler to cower everyone into submission. He/she doesn't appear to have posted today so that's why there's no modding/thread closing.

He/she replied chattily to a modded post in a closed thread see http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio3/F6643900?thread=3907318&latest=1#p45881100 which is a little inconsistent!!

But it's not really worth bothering with the Music Matters board IMO. Rob Cowan's board is quite good though, he doesn't seem to mind off-topic threads and he seems to reply quickly to people, hope it lasts.

t-p, you may have misunderstood me: I meant that if you already play this:

and have played a bit of this:

then it won't take too long to be able to make some sense of this:

The last one is a chalumeau. I was playing one to cheer myself up this afternoon after leaving the CMR3 boards. But now I'm practising a piece by Richard Barrett on the clarinet, which is even more effective.

I've only posted links to the images, by the way - please have a look especially at the website the recorder one came from (right-click and choose Properties). A wonderful Dutch recorder maker, Jacqueline Sorel (you can also just google her name). I don't think she's related to Julien. Her website is a wonderful place to spend some time dreaming. In fact I think I'll spend the last couple of minutes of my practice break there. Smiley

Thank you ollie, the site of Jacqueline Sorel is a beautiful place. I listened to a modern piece and found it beautiful.
I like it when they play nice and sharp (not really but on the note sort of), it always perk me up.
I don't know how to describe a note or a phrase when it is played well. One string player told me that the notes are V shaped and bouncing.

Do you know if this lady is willing to give an interview? Or is she just as seclusive and secretive as the people of the Heckel company?

I'm asking this because I'm helping someone who's making radio programmes for the Orion Webbox (a kind of internet radio for visual handicapped people). Recently, we had a few programmes about organs and organ music. I think it would be nice to make a programme about the recorder.

For me it's hard to know - I've only visited the site of course. But a lot of what she writes on the site (for example on the feel of the different woods and her philosophy as a maker) leads me to think it could be both possible and very interesting.

One of my own favourite musicians happens to be a recorder player: http://www.genevievelacey.com/

Well, the game really is up over on the Music Matters board. Sylvie is closing all the threads at a rate of knots.  Angry

Ahem. Message for Sylvie. Are you listening, Sylvie? Here it comes. (If it wasn't you who closed the thread, pass this on.)

Hmmm... Undecided

I understand that people don't like the new MB, but the way they're spoiling the Breakfast MB is simply horrible. There's no excuse for that. Angry

It's a cry for help.

Anyway, they'll all be over here soon, and this can continue to become what the R3 board once was - only better!
