Hi Matthew

A lot of David Niven's films were quite lightweight, but if you want to see him in something worthwhile (he really played the same "debonair British johnny" in all his films, a sort of non-caddish version of Terry Thomas) then get hold of the Powell & Pressburger B&W-with-colour-moments masterpiece "A MATTER OF LIFE & DEATH",  which you should be able to find from Amazon Resellers for about 6 quid, and worth every penny.  The "judgement" scene goes on a bit,  but otherwise it's a super yarn. It was funded by the Ministry Of Information at the time, because it was sensed there was anti-American feeling building after WW2 and they needed to show a Brit-American romance at the heart of a film.  What Powell & Pressburger did with that brief - well, I'll say nothing more. The patriotism seeps from every sinew but it's in a good cause.  The opening scene must be one of Niven's most famous...   it was also unusual in that to bolster morale, little had been said (far less shown) of British fatalities in the war in the official media, so it was a highly sensitive subject.

fantastic!

I will let you know what i think after I have seen it, my housemates will probably be interested as well, so we will all watch it together.

Whilst the musical content of what will arise from this exercise is open to speculation, from the greater perspective of the Arts today his project does display aspects of concept, preparation and application, in effect asking his volunteers to become performers improvising within a tightly controlled situation, and think about what they are doing.

And, as has been pointed out once or twice, participation is not actually compulsory for those who aren't interested Smiley

I'm still a bit nervous about asking the bus driver for a ticket for an unpremeditated stop on 21 January but I'll try and be brave.

Matthew, thanks for your considered and lengthy replies to our (very mixed) reactions! I do hope you're serious when you say you aren't put off your project by (some of) them. Best of luck with it.

hey martle, no problem, its very interesting, although some people don't seem to be giving me any chance at all, which is very sad and unfair...and they should really stop posting on here (A) hopefully this is now the case!

Now, on this matter of multiple serial logins used by at least one participant here ...

Who is the participant you have in mind?

Oh, I think she knows well enough, having been one of the first to have a go at Matthew's project here. Well done for taking the bait though.

---

Matthew, I see you are still around. Do seek out Niven's "THe Moon is a Balloon". It's well worth reading.

At this point, it's quite obvious that Matthew is no 'cut and run' merchant. Whatever individual members' feelings may be, the fact that Matthew has sat late into the night going through the thread and answering each post in turn certainly proves his enthusiasm and dedication. He is, as others have pointed out and he himself admitted, very young, and his knowledge of what others take for granted perhaps sketchy or nonexistent.

But....

He lives (and has grown up) in a very different world to most of us: a world where the norm is to wish for fame by appearing on a reality TV show and being given everything on a plate, a world where consumer mass market music is often little more than a cut and paste job of other people's scraps assembled on a computer, and the dominant forms of entertainment seem to discourage the act of thought completely. Whilst the musical content of what will arise from this exercise is open to speculation, from the greater perspective of the Arts today his project does display aspects of concept, preparation and application, in effect asking his volunteers to become performers improvising within a tightly controlled situation, and think about what they are doing.

It has been noted that as the night progressed and the reactions down the thread he was answering became more repetitve that his good humour and courtesy were stretched beyond breaking point, but given the situation, I hope most will understand, and at least excuse....on this occasion.

Lastly, for Matthew (and others)

Good Morning Ron,

As usual, your posts are extremely to the point, useful and very well written.

Many thanks for the link to heiner goebbels Smiley

I was about to suggest you took a trip to Windsor that day, George, but it turns out to be a Monday, so I would not be able to ease your trepidation as we're only running at the weekends during winter. Wink

On the toilet, you are composing in your head...is that a performance?

No it jolly well isn't.... exactly.

Quote
please get back in your bubble, there is clearly no point in discussing anything with you that goes past using multipule brain cells or 1895.

This is rude and insulting.
Quote
the above is clearly ridiculous...i cant remember the last time i heard anyone use foul langauge on the bus, are you sure you arent shopping in a creche?

No, I live in South East London where the f word is used more than ANY other... believe me.

I am not going to contribute anymore on this thread.. I don't find what you say you are doing interesting , it is completely infantile.

In retrospect, it was rude of me to make the above comments, which I now retract.  Please understand that I had spent 3 hours reading all of the messages and responding in one go and the messages from yourself were generally quite distressing which upset me and still saddens me today.

It is quite clear that you dont understand what I am doing and don't really want to.  I am correct here am I not? there is no bad intention with what I have just written, please correct me otherwise.

This project will happen and I will encourage others to do the same.  I WILL continue to do these things throughout my life, for it is my life ,and I will have to face all kinds of absurd and thoughtful reactions so this is good preparation.

I don't think you should leave the board, perhaps we should put things aside and see what we do have in common and work from there?  For instance I am a pianist and I love to play Mozart, Clementi and Chopin, I am also heavily into poetry, reading it and writing it.

Matthew,

Only came to this thread today, and spent some time catching up.  I like the idea of what you are doing, and I don't really care whether it is called music or not.  Sometimes I think it's not the activity that people detest - they just get hoodwinked by mislabelling.  Others get antsy because of value judgements - e.g. "how can this be better than the many hours I put into practising at college?"

But we'll see if your events project has any value.  Personally, I think looking at everyday events in a new way is immensely valuable for giving you a different perspective, although it almost requires a different mindset to begin with.  As for the finished 'composition', I guess you may just see what numbers come up and what inspiration that gives you?

you have no idea what I am going to do with the reciepts yet.

Do you?

One final thing - Baz's spoof grant application (the one with £6,500), had me fooled for a bit.  I like your project, but I wouldn't spend £6,500 on it without knowing a bit more about what you are going to do with the data, or why it costs £6,500?  Anyway, that observation is irrelevant if this is entirely self-funded or low-cost.  are there any big financial implications to this?

Good luck with an interesting project

hey tommo, welcome to the thread!

firstly, the £6,500...i have no idea where this figure came from...the costs for this project are extremely low, they have to be as I dont have any money!

i have an idea what I am going to do with the receipts, but its not something I want to discuss just yet....ideas have to live in my head for some time before I let them out....

with regards to labelling, its just something that everyone does without thought, if one cant put a label on something, its usually hard to talk about it....but sometimes it can go too far.

i don't doubt that this project has value, I wouldnt do something if i thought of it as invaluable.

I am glad you like the idea though Smiley

Good to see that you are still with us Matthew, after something of a baptism of fire yesterday! Thanks for taking the time and patience to respond to all the points that were raised by posters. Have you had the chance to explore some of the other boards here? You might want to look 21st Century on the Music Appreciation Board or the Making Music board. You`ll see some familiar names there, I`m sure Smiley Good luck with the project.
