I was amazed when I came back from my trip to Death in Venice and found everything had changed over there (BBC boards I mean, not Venice). I'm staying with both boards too, but this one's more fun and more open.

I am glad that you are staying on both boards, Mary.
I am enjoying your company very much.

I think most people will use both MBs, I just find it gratifying that they realised what a monumental mistake they had made and that the new MBs 'were not benefitting the community' although we told them at the outset that it wouldn't work.  Shame it's taken them nearly 4 months though.

Welshio!
Absolutely buglelutely. What a lot of damage that caused. It's looking far better already, despite certain constituencies still not being catered for - new music? Anyway, I look forward to an official explanation of the volte face... NOT!  Wink

I'm so used to this board now that I think that I will only visit the other place for programme-related issues (Night Waves, for instance).

For general musical topics I will use this lovely message board, naturally. Excellent members here: you can't get them better elsewhere. Wink

I'm also addicted to the picture association game. I couldn't live without it!

I shall swing both ways! This board is much friendlier - and much more user-friendly. This is the one good thing to come from Roger the Bodger's debacle 'over there', and I'm very grateful to the organisers here.  Kiss

I've had a look at the new look R3MB and it's starting to look THIS place! But we've got colour photos!  Cheesy

Seriously though, it has taken R3 quite a long time to do the u-turn, but I welcome it. Just hope we don't fizzle out here. I left a comment in the Music Matters board, that it's a shame if they archive that board, it'll just get lost. I've suggested they merge it with Platform 3.

But can they merge?  Roll Eyes

One major difference for me is that over there it remains somewhat "them and us", whereas over here it's "us and us".

Well, I've now registered on the Beeb boards ( hadn't posted for ages going waaaaay back to Classical Forum or whatever it was called ) I still don't find it a very welcoming environment and of course will be in pre-mod for ages, so anything I post will be essentially pointless by the time it appears ( ok, that's if it wasn't pointless in the first place ) Since I've been posting here, I have read the other board occasionally and thought of something useful I could add to a discussion, only to remember I wasn't registered. So I guess that sort of thing is now possible. I'm more likely to use it as a fall back though, in case use of this forum does start to fall off significantly. Things have seemed quieter here recently but that may be down to the summer and to folks being away from their base etc.  It must basically be "a good thing" that a more liberal attitude has been reinstated there, just a shame about the troll content.

After reply #39, I committed to pursuing the BBC on their 'research'.  It's all irrelevant now, but just for closure.....

I had several exchanges, during which I tried to chase several bits of information:

First they said that there was lots of research that the BBC had conducted before making the changes on 17 February.

I asked for details of what research

I was told that it was extensive, but that they could not disclose it.

I asked for more detail specifically on the messageboard changes, seeing as I couldn't argue that other user testing had been conducted.

I had a response to say that Radio 3 operated in a competitive market, so the BBC could not disclose its research.

I wrote back to say that I could not understand who the BBCs competitors were, nor how the competitive use of the research could still be valid, given the changes had been made. I ased specifically for an understanding of the research conducted with existing messageboard members to help decide the messageboard changes.

Sadly, my request was rebuffed again on competition grounds. The BBC would not even let me know who they are in competition with.

However, as events seem to have overtaken us, and the messageboards have returned to some form of normality, I don't actually see any point in pursuing this.......

I hope you agree.

Thanks

Interesting.  The BBC is a public body covered by the Freedom of Information Act, so you are entitled to the information unless they can demonstrate that a proper public interest test has been carried out (and you are entitled to access to the details of that test, and any internal correspondence relating to your request).  A request for papers relating to decisions about the message boards could be enlightening ...

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)
