Good idea!
Last time I heard Donald Runnicles do Wagner at the Proms was with Robin Holloway's Symphony in the first half, about which I've just finished an article, so there's a nice sort of symmetry there.

Funny thing is, I'd have avoided it like the plague before the age of 35 or so; now, practically any performance of G-rung is a must. The ride of a lifetime. Plus, its length makes it a bit fun, with multiple intervals, food and drink opps etc. Yessss! Oh-oh. I'm starting to sound like Lord B...

I have had the great pleasure of singing in the chorus. Ooh, ooh, I want to do that! 'Hagen, der grimme!' etc. That's on an augmented triad, is it not, Ollie? Evil, evil, evil! martleberich

I have had the great pleasure of singing in the chorus. And anyone with the Goodall LP set will have access to at least one picture of Ron strutting his stuff in Act 3. My favourite moment is still the funeral march, where despite the difficulties of being one of the six or eight carrying Alberto as Siegfried, let alone coping with his Scouse running commentary ("Come on now, laa, me left side's droopin' a bit: get yer 'and off me ankles: smoother, lads, I'm gettin' sea-sick here....."etc.,etc., I never once got to the wings without tears streaming down my face (of emotion, not laughter). I'd be there if I could too, guys...

I've heard the last Harry Potter book referred to as Potterdammerung, ho ho! But back to the chorus. I'm a fan of the Keilberth 1955 recording and I'm impressed, amongst other things, by the fact that that production did not seem to be affected by any post-war austerity. The chorus, for example, seems huge. I wonder what a typical number would be. There's a photo on page 32 of the booklet which suggests over 50 men. (I can't find that picture to put up but there's this one which gives a rough idea.)

Indeed it is. And followed by 'sticht' on a short top A and then whatever I could squeak out for the top on 'ward'... I've heard the last Harry Potter book referred to as Potterdammerung, ho ho! Hoi ho! That's a good one. Oo, look at the ad this thread's brought up - increase your vocal range, full octave guaranteed!

I'll be there. I've seen the others and this looks set to be the highlight of the 'Proms Ring'. At the very least it will make up for the minor disappointment of Eschenbach's 'Siegfried'; but I'm expecting it to be even better than Pappano's 'Walküre' -and that was superb. The big problem now is finding someone I can trust to record it; because they never have an afternoon repeat for the operas, do they? Even a minidisc on LP4 won't get the whole broadcast with intervals so I need to find someone who can both work the MD and recognise where to pause and re-start. and am intending to prom, with sarnies, german beer and and kleenex at the ready. A meet-up oppurtunity, perhaps?
are you sure you'll get away with this picnic, martle? If so, perhaps you could give some reassurance to rfenwick in the other place: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio3/F7497567?thread=4402315

Ollie, I was on the point of making exactly the same suggestion. But an alternative would be to hang out in the interval(s) outside, smoke tabs, do sarnies and beer, have a r3ok laugh or two, head back in for more kleenex fodder... Anyway, yes HtoHe, it looks like a doozy!
