Blimey, they don't stage operas like that any more, do they?

For the handful of people here who know who I'm talking about, this should amuse. I went to the ENO Gotters that formed part of their Ring cycle a couple of years ago. Tansfixed and transported (as I always am by this extraordinary work), I was standing outside the Collie during one of the interval breaks, studying the programme (and having a fag). Very close to my ear, I was rudely interrupted from this reverie by a deep, gravelly voice, in obvious imitation of the trailer voice in cinemas which intones things like 'Arnold Schwarzenegger IS the Terminator', saying 'Twilight of the DOGS'. It was Simon Holt, passing by. We were at college together, so after picking myself up off the floor I kicked his knees. For old times' sake.

Pretty sure that's a 1972 picture, folks, so no Ron. The one that should be in the book is one of Siegfried sitting down doing his Act 3 narration bit with a group of junior Vassals around him. Stunning production visually, all the more effective for being simple. A bit sci-fi, perspex and plastic leather... here's all I've found so far on line

The picture came from the booklet with the Chandos reissue of Twilight of the Gods. I can remember the picture you mention from the original LP booklet, but sadly I don't have the LPs any more.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Looking forward to this. Early queuing, and much cheese from Partridge's to survive the day...
(and that's bumped the thread up near the top too)

Good Morning, Gotterdammerungers. The day has arrived. I won't be there in person but this is to wish you all a good marathon. Sandwiches, check. Flask of tea, check. Emergency banana, check. Hip flask, check. Crossword for the queue, check. Small first-aid kit, check. Have a good day everyone

To elaborate. It's dramatic (a concert version!), the orchestra is on good form (don't worry about the opening chord), strong voices singing well, coming over very clearly on the radio. What more do you want? Bravo, Runnicles!
But I'm going to shut up now, in case I've spoken too soon, but I can't see it falling apart (except for Valhalla at the end).

I quite agree, Tony. The first two acts have been seriously impressive - and the BBC SO are covering themselves in glory.

... and the third act certainly lived up to what had gone before, IMO. Looking forward to hearing the reactions of those lucky people who were there.

I wish I could have been there too. A more than worthy conclusion to the four-year project. Wow!

A particularly memorable performance; perhaps the pinnacle of the season? I do wish I'd been there.

Does the BBCSO play this sort of thing very often? If not, all the more credit to Runnicles, who I think should take most of the praise for this evening, but well done to the orchestra too for rising so well to the challenge. The chorus made a big impact too. If I seem to be overlooking the principals, it's because I excpected them to be excellent beforehand, and they certainly were.
