50+ at the Coli would have been right, Tony. Twilight was one of the shows where an extra chorus was used, plus some actors as well. There was a pool of established free-lance singers who were used quite regularly: in the short time I was there they were hired for Aida and House of the Dead as well, and quite possibly David Blake's Toussaint

Thanks, Ron; I'll bear that in mind.  I should be able to find someone who can monitor the recording.  It's not rocket science, after all; but the fact remains that all the people of my acquaintance who can be guaranteed to know the difference between a live opera and an interval feature will be at the RAH with me!  So if the BBC's timings are inaccurate for any reason - late start, overrunning intervals etc - an inexperienced person might get confused.

The big problem now is finding someone I can trust to record it; because they never have an afternoon repeat for the operas, do they?  Even a minidisc on LP4 won't get the whole broadcast with intervals so I need to find someone who can both work the MD and recognise where to pause and re-start.

Hi H,

You need to get a Hi-MD minidisc, you can get almost 8 hours onto one of the 1GB MDs using Hi-SP recording mode - or if you're happy with Hi-LP you can get far more (c. 34 hours). That should be enough for even the most long-winded of Wagner's operas.  Wink

Hi H,

You need to get a Hi-MD minidisc

Hi Andy,

good to hear from you.  I don't have a Hi-MD machine and I presume the large-capacity discs won't work on either of my ordinary MD recorders.  If I'm wrong please let me know and I'll go off in search of such a disc as soon as the shops open.  I'm not going to invest in a new machine, though.  In the vast majority of cases I can get someone to press 'record' before the start of a broadcast with complete confidence that the machine will capture the whole broadcast before the disc runs out of space.

You're correct H, if your recorders are not Hi-MD then you can't use the 1GB discs. Minidisc is a bit of a dead-end now, everyone but Sony has given up on the format, but their current model the MZ-RH1 is a very versatile machine. It's aimed very much at people who make live recordings, they've given up trying to compete with ipods. You're probably wise not to invest further in them though, since Sony might suddenly dump the whole thing.

The Hi-SP mode sounds better than SP yet it gets 2hrs 20mins onto an MD80 and I find the 8hrs you get from a 1GB disc to be marvellous for recording progammes whilst I'm out - I just set it going as I leave.

Martle!

Could you do me an enormous favour? It would make me very happy.

As the one who started this thread, could you change the title to Prom 39 - Gotterdammerung ? It's just that I'm a bit of an obsessive about these things and I like everything to be nice, neat and complete. I'd like to see a thread starting Prom ... for every concert. You can change the title as I've just done it with my very popular Promundrum thread. I would sleep more easily tonight!

Thanks.

Thanks for that, O Green One. I'm glad I'm not in Oliver's shoes right now. Wondering where that CD had got to would drive me nuts.

Barman (to drinker): Excuse me, Sir: do you know you've got a steering wheel sticking out of your flies?
Drinker: Yes I do, and it's driving me nuts.

 #  9           Ron,  This afternoon, I was looking at the rather posh ENO brochure, A4 size, which they produced as a pictorial record of the whole cycle and I'm fairly certain that I got my copy for the mid-70's revival, conducted by Charles Mackerras, although I also attended earlier performances - 1972-ish - when he, or Charles Groves, deputised if Reggie Goodall was indisposed.

Further to your comments about being a pall bearer in Siegfried's funeral march, were you aware that your carrying efforts are featured, as a front double-page spread on the brochure?   The lighting also favours Siegfried and his carriers.    Of course, it is also possible that the photograph was taken for the opening production.

A trick of memory.    If asked, I would have named Aage Haugland as Hagen, quite forgetting that I'd seen Clifford Grant in the role a few years earlier.   Indeed, he was most effective but Haugland had a huge stage presence and voice; the vassals quickly responded to his summons!

Edmund Tracey wrote the feature article; The Birth of the Sadler's Wells Opera 'Ring' - a Personal Memoir.     HMV took a 1 page advertisement promoting the release of a 4 LP set of The Rhinegold for £8  95p.

Rather touching to see photographs of Rita Hunter, Norman Bailey, Alberto Remedios, Margaret Curphey, Derek Hammond Stroud, Katherine Pring, Ava June & Ann Howard - and this production remains a landmark for me.

Funny thing is, I'd have avoided it like the plague before the age of 35 or so; now, practically any performance of G-rung is a must. The ride of a lifetime.

I have had the great pleasure of singing in the chorus. Smiley

And anyone with the Goodall LP set will have access to at least one picture of Ron strutting his stuff in Act 3. My favourite moment is still the funeral march, where despite the difficulties of being one of the six or eight carrying Alberto as Siegfried, let alone coping with his Scouse running commentary ("Come on now, laa, me left side's droopin' a bit: get yer 'and off me ankles: smoother, lads, I'm gettin' sea-sick here....."etc.,etc., I never once got to the wings without tears streaming down my face (of emotion, not laughter). I'd be there if I could too, guys...

Ron, would this be the picture?
