Well, I'll be there - never seen Abbado in concert so I'll be catching the train over. Anyone else here planning on catching it? (The Prom not the train.)

Yes, I've got my ticket for what must be one of the season highlights (along with Haitink's Bruckner 8 ). I remember Abbado conducting the Berlin Phil in Mahler 4 in 1991 in what was, I think, their first Proms appearance - now that was a memorable night!

Shall be lurking in the Arena as usual, hopefully will be able to get away from work a little earlier than usual as the season ticket queue is bound to be enormous.

Perhaps someone could casually suggest to byron that such an accessory might also prove essential for his ogle-fest tonight...

# 3 Opilec, your query re Abbado at the Proms in the 80s brought back a clear memory and I'm now surrounded by a whole collection of programmes.
In fact, it was 1981 - I know, demoralising isn't it? -
Wednesday, 12 August 1981
Mozart attrib. Sinfonia Concertante in E flat major for clarinet, horn, oboe, bassoon and orchestra, K.Anh.9
Mahler Symphony No 5
London Symphony Orchestra Claudio Abbado
I remember attending 3 consecutive Proms: Curzon playing Mozart's Piano Con 27, K595, on 11 August and a glorious Glyndebourne production of Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos on 13th:LPO /Gustav Kuhn
I've browsed through the mid-80s and the late season Mahler in '85, was Das Lied von der Erde with Jessye Norman ("There ain't no sideways") Jon Vickers; CBSO/Simon Rattle on 3 Sept and Sym No 4 on 11 Sept, Swedish Radio SO/Esa-Pekka Salonen.
I'll continue browsing in the garden and return if I have more gen. Too many hot visual flushes on this thread to stay indoors!

I'm sure I saw Abbado do some Mahler at the Proms many years ago with the VPO: anyone have an idea what it might have been? Some time in the mid-80s? Was it the Fifth? My memory's getting hopeless ...
Abbado certainly did a Mahler 2 with the Berlin Phil - I think in about 1993? With an all-Brahms concert (Piano Concerto No 1, Symphony No 1) the following (or possibly preceding?) night. The problem is that, without a trip to the loft to dig out old Proms books, I can remember the programmes but not the dates ....

There was a VPO/Bernstein Mahler 5 on 10 September 1987, opilec. Mozart's Clarinet Concerto with Peter Schmiedl in the first half if that helps to ring bells.
At least that's what it says in the prospectus. It's possible that Bernstein had to cancel and Abbado took his place? He (Abbado) conducted the other VPO Prom that year, Beethoven 9, the following day.
Abbado also conducted a number of other VPO Proms during the 1980s but no Mahler that I can find.

No, definitely Bernstein. I wouldn't have got the date (although I might have got the year at a pinch) but I certainly haven't forgotten the performance. Opilec, I wonder whether you might be remembering a Mahler series that Abbado did with the LSO a couple of years earlier? 1985, I think (I do remember that the Resurrection was, appropriately enough, on Easter Sunday).

That Bernstein Mahler 5 at the Proms was a ripsnorter. I sat there with my jaw at about knee level the whole way through, wore the tape out over the following months, bought the Vienna CD of course as soon as it came out but it wasn't quite the same, not quite as exciting (last movement starts too slow for me and a couple of not so endearing momentum interrupters here and there), made another cassette copy when it was rebroadcast but all the same, cassettes, you know, it was all I had but it's not quite all it could be, you know?...
Oh, and the almighty roar from the assembled Prommers at the end. Now there's a symphony I don't mind getting a good dose of... er, no, better not say it that way... symphony where I don't at all mind the audience letting themselves go at the end. (Phew.)

It certainly was ... sadly my cassette of the concert was inside a car that got stolen (along with the Goodall WNO Valkyrie). Sadly, I was much more upset about the tapes than the car (which was a heap, and at least insured ...)
