Can I belatedly add the TROYENS love duet based on lines from THE MERCHANT?  Undecided

I never knew that, but given Berlioz's love of Shakespeare, it doesn't come as a complete surprise.

The duet always sounds comic to my ears, knowing the Shakespeare scene it's based on (the lines come from 5.1, where Jessica and Lorenzo repeat 'In such a night'; in Berlioz's 'Nuit d'ivresse' it translates as 'Pour une telle nuit', a phrase also repeated several times).

Your new quartet doesn't seem to be operatic at all  Cry

Bravo, John! Isn't the VW Serenade beautiful?

Well I can't remember when I last listened to the Serenade but I have the LP with Boult/Burrowes/Armstrong et al so sometime today it'll be on the turntable  Smiley

I almost went for another possible answer to the Shylock/MoV connection, Humperdinck - Moorish Rhapsody, which I saw listed at Naxos. Anyone heard that?

The Debussy is the non-operatic answer!

Maxwell Davies: The DOCTOR of Myddfai
Dittersdorf: DOKTOR und Apoteker
John Adams: Nixon in China (DR Henry Kissinger)
Debussy: ? (definitely not the PELLEAS Doctor).

Elementary!

PMD and Dittersdorf correct; the Debussy is part of a piano work, the Adams an opera title.

Yes - what's the collective noun for doctors?

Dittersdorf Der Apotheker und der Doktor
P. Maxwell Davies the Doctor of Myddfai
Debussy Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum
Adams Doctor Atomic

After much frustration (see Grumpy Rant Room) I managed to book a ticket to see Rolando Villazon in L'Elisir d'Amore and persevered to get a ticket for Iphigénie en Tauride with Simon Keenlyside and Susan Graham in September. Feeling happier now!

Thanks for that, John; a new one on me. I had a listen, found it on HMV and duly ordered a copy. It's conducted by Martin Fischer-Dieskau - must be the son of the great DF-D.

Here’s a tricky one. This time, you’re not looking for a common word theme, but the connection is another composer, i.e. the works by these composers have similar or identical titles to ones by our mystery composer:

Ives
Martinu
Henze
Donizetti

I’ll add some more composers later on if needed…

IGI, I once saw a performance in English by a touring company visiting the area of L'ELISIR re-titled DR DULCAMARA'S ELIXIR! It was as Adina that I later (I think '96) saw my beloved AG (my only AG opera  Cry), then there was a not-so-memorable updated production by ENO in '97-98 (the Dr was Andrew Shore). Never seen TAURIDE. The casts of your operas are splendid, and I'm sure you'll enjoy them both.

Your new quartet:

Henze: Don Chisciotte della Mancia?
