Does it have anything to do with Mozart?

Messiaen - Un Sourire

Works that quote or are written in homage to Wolfgang?

I fear you're enjoying this, martle. Ever thought about a post in the Inquisition?!

Am I correct in thinking it's something to do with casts?

Rossini - The Barber of Seville
Strauss - Der Rosenkavalier
Puccini - Manon Lescaut

As well as Figaro, the barber, the other two operas have hairdressers listed in the cast (albeit silent roles).

Nope.  Cheesy

Only the Rossini and Puccini are operatic. But it's nothing to do with subject matter. Think more, oh I don't know, climatic...

Strauss - Der Rosenkavalier

And indeed, I think I read this somewhere in the work of the admirable Mr Lebrecht, there exists a sketch for a sequel to the Sinfonia domestica which finds Strauss taking the dog for a walk, collecting the morning paper, having a flutter on the horses and paying a visit to the barber, where he has his moustache trimmed and purchases something for the weekend.

OK, I'm in generous mood after a chicken.  Tongue

Have another composer overnight. This one should help give the game away.

Puccini
Rossini - The Barber of Seville
Tippett
Strauss
Messiaen
Vaughan Williams

Wind machines!

Rossini – Il barbiere di Siviglia
Strauss – Don Quixote
Vaughan Williams – Sinfonia antartica
Puccini - La Fanciulla del West
Tippett - Symphony no. 4
Messiaen - Des Canyons aux étoiles… or Saint-François d'Assise or Éclairs sur l'au-delà…

Would Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé be on that subs’ bench?

(I might also appeal that Strauss’ Alpine Symphony should have drawn verdant approval… Embarrassed)

Excellent work, IGI!! Correct in all particulars, including subs and alternates.

...the connection being that they all feature wind machines. A little run-on from your car horns puzzler the other day! And very appropriate for the weather today in west Wales, let it be said.  Shocked

It's a fine, sunny day down here (but then, yesterday started that way...)

Here's a tricky little puzzle in response!  Wink

Try and connect these composers... clues and extra composers to follow

Tchaikovsky
Howells
Scriabin
Hillborg
