As Milly knows, I was a single parent for most of my children's lives after my husband died, as well - my younger one can't remember his father. ALL of the children I've known who have stolen things came from stable two-parent families. It really makes no difference whatsoever, and in the cases of children who are genuinely criminal, I suspect those tendencies are usually picked up from the father.

Milly, isn't it possible that the mother mouthed "I'm sorry" because she knew/the child had told her that he had taken the game this time, rather than that he was in the habit of doing it? At least she is upset about it!

Well it is possible but she looked to me as though she was expecting it.  I agree that her handling of the situation has been beyond reproach.   He didn't admit that he'd taken them right to the end  Right to this morning he insisted to me he'd "found them in his pocket".  She was the one last night that took our word for it - another reason I think it might be habitual.  She didn't rest until she'd found all five.  He had given us one back straight away remember, the first time I went round.  He'd hidden the rest.   They are tiny, slim things.  They would have taken some finding.  I'm sure she knew he'd done it.  She could have taken his side if he wasn't in the habit of doing this and assumed that we had mislaid them.  She didn't even consider that a possibility.  It was much later on in the evening whilst I was playing cards that she rang.  She must have taken the house apart to find them because he wasn't ever going to either admit it, or assist her in looking.

I have every respect for her and her contrition is immense.  Unfortunately, his isn't.  Anyway, I consider that we're lucky to have got them back at all and I'll just play it by ear from now on with the situation.  I have no problem  with giving the child a second chance anyway.

It was incredibly slow over the weekend but slightly better now but definitely not fast.

BBM, sometimes when the site is having routine maintenance or upgrades it seems to slow everything down for a while.  It seems to be OK now.

Two men are steam-cleaning my drive, and all paved areas at the back, in pouring rain. I feel so sorry for them, in spite of the fact that I'm paying them. I asked if they'd rather come back on a better day, but no.....I feel almost guilty.

I hate having these things done. It makes it difficult (for me, anyway) to concentrate on anything. I feel jumpy all the time, like a cat.

Perhaps this should have been on the grumpy thread.

Do we have a jumpy thread, though?

I know what you mean - you can't really relax and get on with things can you?  Having the windows cleaned is strange as well, you never know quite which window they're going to pop up at next.  My house is pretty small with lots of big windows, and it's all open plan.  It's a bit like being an exhibit in a museum as there isn't really anywhere to hide. The cat freaks out every time.  Smiley
