I find burning effigies of anyone distasteful.

Sounds like Stella Gibbons had got it right about Sussex in Cold Comfort Farm.

Do they give the Pope effigy a Papa Ratzinger mask, to show it's him?

I imagine even that nice Abbot Christopher at Worth Abbey would take a pretty dim view of these goings on.

I'm glad in my native land (viz. East Devon, Ottery St Mary) they only imperil themselves with burning tar barrels.

I'd far rather see John Calvin and Martin Luther burnt in effigy, if anyone had to be, for introducing the ghastly idea that being kind and loving to fellow human beings was of no value and that the Bible could only have one level of meaning.

DB, if I had known you were from Ottery St Mary, i would have tried a meet up because myself and MrsBBM passsed by there on our sojourns to and from Cornwall!

Anyway, back to the Lewes senario, 50000  people went this year! I am not surprised because there were a fair few lining the main streets. We finished off playing Sussex by the Sea, which is compulsory ofcourse. Would'nt be the same if we didn't! The band that had arrived there, called Lewes, Glynde & Beddingham, saw us playing SBTS, and just stood there!! We had a bit of banter about it,saying why they did'nt join in!! All good fun.

Just popped in for a quick waffle and nobody's around! What is it? Late bonfire parties? Something on the telly?

Oh well. Maybe I should get back to writing that report. Or perhaps food...  Tongue

Sorry to hear that, Mary. I don't know about where you are, but here it's pelting it down and is grey, windy and horrid. That wouldn't do much for anyone's mood, mine no exception. Perhaps chocolate is in order. I bought some chocolate-covered brazil nuts from Waitrose

today, and they certainly seem to have a mood-improving effect. But then I've also had several glasses of wine. So it's hard to tell.  Undecided

Wine doesn't work for me, martle - it just makes me feel ill. Chocolate is better.

I just don't like Saturdays for some reason. Perhaps it's a vague feeling that everyone else is having a good time.

DB, if I had known you were from Ottery St Mary,

I'm from East Devon, bbm, but I have lived in the London  Borough of Hackney for close on twenty years....

I have spent the day going up to Belper and back to see an old university friend whose marriage has gone completely to pieces.

I was very sorry about that, but I found it strangely satisfying for me that my just being there seemed to be a help.

Of course it helped - someone to talk to is always the most important thing.

I always feel very sad when I hear about marriages going wrong. Why does it happen so much more now than it used to?
