As Ron said, there does appear to be some "tangential animosity creeping in here", unfortunately. Perhaps we might wait for a response from Matthew  re. the issues that have been raised since his initial posting? He would appear to welcome feedback and, let us not forget, this is supposed to be a Welcome thread. No fisticuffs please,
chaps!

It may seem "tangential" to everyone else, but it doesn't feel very tangential to me. Neither do I think that the broadness of my musical perception and understanding is as limited as has been imputed.

I am hoping that some of the things alleged about me may, with the benefit of hindsight, be politely retracted in due course.

Indeed, including imputations of 'b*lloc*s' (not on Baz's part, I hasten to add) and chicanery towards young first-time posters who might not be expected to know the finer points of MB etiquette, and are obviously merely trying to drum up some necessary support for a composition project.

Well, 'b*lloc*s' is a term used in some musical circles  Smiley I'm sure Matthew is aware that some people's response to his new work would include that term; I was just saying to Anna that some will make that response while others won't, we should hear the finished article first, while wishing it was to be something more inventive/original.

Welcome, Matthew!

I'm intrigued by this project, and I'll be interested to see the results of its realisation  Smiley  The whole genre of "happenings" is under-developed, and there are lots more avenues to be explored..  I'm glad to see you working in this rather neglected field!

Good luck with the project!

thank you so much! yes I think there is much more scope for happenings and such and this area of performance is something I am interested in.

It will be a massive learning curve for me whatever happens...its quite new for me and I have totally thrown myself in at the deep end...Im having to face a lot of questions...its all very good though.

Thank you, Mort.

Thank you Matthew, too, for getting back to us. As you can see, one way or another, you've caused quite a stir.
You say that this is quite new to you: perhaps you could tell us what you've been creating up until now.

I'm glad that you're still with us, Baz: I can quite understand why an insensitive comment, though made in jest, might have tempted you to leave us yet again. I've not found any evidence of this previous publication regarding the temperament associated with Bach's 48, so unless the poster concerned can provide it, it is correct that you would be justified in expecting a polite retraction.

I've talked before about 'lines in the sand' - the point beyond which a listener can no longer comprehend certain combinations of sound as music. We all know that these exist for the vast majority of listeners, yet can be in very different places for different people. We're never going to get anywhere arguing over them: there's no agreed standard: they're the product of taste, experience and the way an individual brain is wired, and nobody has a right to claim that his/her lines are the only ones that matter, or berate someone else simply because theirs are located elsewhere.

Welcome Matthew!  What a wonderful and enthusiastic entrance. I hope you`ll be able to link up with like minded spirits here. You will certainly be guaranteed of stimulating discussion. Your project sounds intriguing. I wish you all the best.

Glad you liked my entrance! I didnt mean for it to be anything special, I just want to share with you all what I am doing.  I am sure lots of people will love this and be in awe, i also know that I am going to be unpopular with many....calling myself a composer and writing an event score which I am calling music.  i think it is important to think outside the box and not be restricted by what anyone trying to keep you down.

i hope you will take part in the project, it would be wonderful Smiley

Well, on the date in question I will get on the bus Monday January 21st 2008 at 08.11 and get off at 08.20

How that is of interest to anyone is beyond me.

You cannot underestimate the interest of something or nothing.

As a composer i am hugely interested in numbers, I want to work with numbers that come from as strange a situation as possible.  I will write a piece which uses 08:11 and 08:20, i will have inspiration from the location the bus was boarded, i may have inspirational pictures or films, I will know a little something about the performer and the piece will be inspired.

the 8:11 is a normal journey for you, this is never a performance, or it is always a performance.  if it is never a performance, then this is a chance for you to experience a different mind set, if it is always a performance....

I wish for you to board that bus as a performer, of my music and follow my instructions.
I have tried this myself, telling myself before i do something quite banal that I am performing: it was a bizarre state of mind I got myself into.

its very individual and allows you to go into your own mind, thats what I want my music to do normally and here is no exception, six_events is a word score that provokes a reaction that creates a sound, however minimal, therefore it is music, therefore it is relevant, therefore it is interesting.

Cage once remarked that he did not mind the teenagers playing their loud music around him, as everytime the radio was switched on, he just thought they were playing his music.

Do you know "waiting for godot" ?

Thank you so much for your message, i hope I have managed to show you into my thoughts a little bit, I am checking through 6 pages of peoples comments on this subject because I want to know what people think, because I really do care and I have just spent 30 minutes replying to you.  I hope you appreciate that and now see why i am interested in the time you get on and off the bus.

Before I log off, can all those folks who have given such a warm welcome to Matthew explain why?

Being dim, but what does this has to do with music?  When you purchased something at Scummerfields

I know I am being ultra dim, but I am sure the enthusiastic Mods will advise

i am slowly working down the list of comments and it is my pleasure to reply to you again, as you are next.

I can see you are quite possibly upset by what I am doing, no, actually, it is because you see no relevance to music in what i am doing. am i right?  you do not like people imposing themselves or their ideas on music?

before I continue (i have lots to say)

please tell me something.

what is music?
Do you find a problem with music and art being so close together?

Thing is, Anty, how do we know what it's about yet? Matthew hasn't said what he would do with the data he's asking for. Sometimes, ya just gotta trust in composers.  Roll Eyes Grin

hey!

As i work down all these comments, replying, questioning and answering...hopefully everything will become clearer.  this forum is great as I can really think deeply about what I am doing.

please do trust me everyone, I am very serious about this project and similar things....I am not an idiot.

 A warm welcome, Matthew.   Smiley

Happenings!   Grin  - cor, you instantly reminded me of shenanigans at the Edinburgh Festival, mid 60s.      Even nude intrusions at the staid Book Festival.   As David Niven said at another location,  "So many people willing to display their shortcomings."

thank you for your brilliant welcome!

Shenanigans at the Edinburgh Festival eh? sounds interesting!

I love your quote, tell me, who is David Niven?

My warm welcome for Matthew's project would be extended similarly to any other new projects which cause us to reflect on what we do in our daily lives, and to look for instances where there might be elements of "art" in our own lives (rather than merely being the passive consumers of "art" created by others).  Smiley

Until MLK's project is completed, it's hard to say what the results will be, of course.  But isn't it worth keeping an open mind and little curiosity?  Who is hurt or affronted, if the project bombs?  Has funding gone down the drain that might have paid for a String Trio to play for an hour in Droitwich?   Wink

thank you so much for this comment, you put very beautiflly what I would have tried to stutter and stammer after a glass of wine Smiley

i would ask others to really read the above, as its so true.  whatever happens, no one will get hurt.

Gosh Matthew you ARE young   Smiley

David Niven was a popular oscar-winning British actor.

I'm sure EVERYONE who posted here will be grateful for your responses on this thread, it will increase your popularity no end, and may convert a few sceptics Wink

Yeh, maybe, but that time I board and the time I leave the bus, or the supermarket is supremely boring to me, let alone anyone else isn't it?  Unless you would like to say why it isn't?

I won't repeat myself down here, please look above for similar response.

I find the word boring extremely interesting.
I cant think of many things that are actually boring.
