Yup, that's pretty much exactly what I said last week.   Wink

Frankly, the likelihood that they'll put any effort into a feature like this is incredibly slim (if not outright nil).  I still think the best bet is to try to talk Tobias Giesen into making a plug-in ... I haven't yet written to him (as I'm too busy at the moment actually using the software in question), but once this #$*(&%**(&$ing piece is done, I'll drop him a line and give him the details of my workaround approach and see if he can automate it.

I'll post my letter to him here once it's been sent off ....

In the meantime, at least they've added colored notehead support for Boomwhackers.  (And Boomwhackers sound samples!!!)

I need quite urgently to get two music examples for an article set (presumably Sibelius or Finale would do it) and converted into a PDF. I'm trying to find out the exact layout requirements, if any, but I imagine it's something anyone with one of those programmes could do.

I've never actually used either programme myself but I imagine it's going to be about 2 hours work. Maybe much less - it's two extracts totalling about 30 bars, which I've reduced from orchestral score into short score on two staves. There are also some analytical labels to be added to one of them.

Would anyone like to offer their services, or know someone else who might be able to help me. It is quite urgent and if it could be done tomorrow (or Sunday at the latest) that would be fantastic. I'd have to either scan in and email my handwritten examples or fax them, which I could do this evening. I certainly wouldn't expect someone to do this for free - perhaps £20 an hour?

Send me a scan and I'll do it. As long as it's a reasonably 'normal'-looking result you need - Sibelius won't do things like straight flags on its own, for example, and I'm not as far along the learning curve as knowing the tricks you'd need to do to persuade it. Scan and email is best for me - if your writing's neat enough and you don't skimp on the resolution I can possibly feed it straight to photoscore which might save some input time.

What's the piece?

Two upgrades from now, what will the Sibelius manufacturers do about the fact that there has already been a Sibelius 7 (in its earliest incarnation)? Will we have Sibelius 7+, Sibelius 7*, Sibelius 7 1/2, or what?

I wonder if at any stage they might have been contemplating going for Sibelius 2007? Nothing to stop them calling it Sib Two Thousand and Whatever anyway.

A few words of advice to anyone considering a Sib 5 upgrade: don't do it yet. 5.0 turns out to be little more than a beta version with (to put it mildly) several bugs, as I have found to my frustration over the past 36 hours; furthermore the interface has changed markedly, and the supposed better V.S.T. support is a nightmare. The clean install from scatch on the Mac is at least working passably (after 18 hours) but the upgrade on the PC has major issues, and even after double reinstallation still can't find the sample files. Perusal of the Sibelius technical chatrooms confirms that I am far from alone in my troubles here. I am aware that not everybody has had difficulties, but the happy ones seem to be the minority right now. Unless you're desperate, wait for 5.1...

Bugler!

I haven't had that issue but I've had others, like the program crashing on trying to create a new score because it was trying to create an instrument in a format it couldn't handle. (Reset defaults, then it worked. Not remotely as annoying as Ron's problem but still a pain.)

Barely started investigating Finale 2008 but already found some weirdnesses there as well. Does no one actually test programs any more?

Well, I write software, and...

Still on 3.  4 seemed pointless (except for dynamic parts which sounded downright scary)  Decided not to upgrade to 5 as I'd have to run it on a computer less than nine years old.
