Just a reminder to folk that Roger Wright is on Feedback - this week? Well I'm pretty sure that it's this week. Many will, as I have, contacted the programme with views about MI's demise on R3. We are lucky that Mark and Robert have decided to carry on on Resonance but I'm not sure that it lets R3 off the hook any more 'lightly'.  Do others have views? Is the campaign (if that's what it ever was) to 're-instate' MI on R3 effectively at an end now that there is an alternative? I'd like to hear what others think. Perhaps this should have been a new thread, not too good at this message board protocol stuff......

Doh, see said I was no good at this, there is a thread discussing Feedback here:

that's where my comment should probably have gone I suspect....  :-(

Well it's a little strange, alves - possibly not sinister, but strange:

A few weeks ago, Feedback featured the fans of Mixing It, asking why this remarkable, unique programme had been ditched (only a stereotyped written reply from RW - time to move on, 16 years etc - predictable stuff). And the Feedback website actually had listener questions posted on it, including one from yours truly.

Now, a week or so before the great man (small caps) appears on the programme to receive the undiluted adulation of his appreciative fans, what is on the Feedback homepage? Naff all, apart from a 'post your comment here' form...

Anyway, FWI I have sent in my three-ha'pence worth, although I am miffed that no-one from the prog has rung me to solicit my objective views. Which weren't just about MI, but the down-market, user-unfriendly place R3 had become. Not to mention the message boards - which I only did en passant.

Stay tuned! For a load of vapid, dismissive whitewash q;o)

I sent a note off to Feedback complaining about MI's demise (on R3) last week - haven't heard anything back yet.

I personally think MI should be back on the BBC - if not Radio 3 then maybe 6Music or something. It's a matter of principle - the BBC should be covering new and experimental music in a serious manner. There seems to be a lot of interest in "leftfield" music now (even the magazine Computer Music covers experimental music techniques - albeit in a "place audio file A on sequencer track B" style). I think a lot of people are looking for a guide to what is a wide and daunting area. Mixing It is that guide - because it covers such a wide range of genres, it can introduce people to music that they otherwise would not have heard. Mark and Robert also explain what they like about the music they play, or give some background info that can really help your understanding. I'm sure I read in one of the charters or somesuch that the BBC aimed to be an informed guide for people appreciating the arts. Well - there you go - Mixing It!

Of course, it may well be that after the way they were treated by Roger Wright, Mark and Robert may not want to go back to the BBC, even if they were offered it.

By the way, guys, last Wednesday's show was a cracking start to your tenure on Resonance FM - I really enjoyed it and look forward to your next one. I do hope the podcast thing works out too.

Some of you might notice that Resonance are billing the next show as 'MyXINGIT'. This is because we've received a letter from the BBC Legal Department asking us not to use the name 'Mixing It'. It contains the following section:

'Whilst we of course have no objection to Mark Russell and Robert Sandall presenting a radio programme which covers new and experimental music, the BBC has issues regarding the unauthorised use of the programme title Mixing It. The BBC has been using the programme name for 16 years and in that time it has become a very established brand for our organisation'

So established they decided to drop it, apparently.

Name suggestions on a postcard please! I'll keep you posted,

Before chucking in the towel on this, I would suggest seeking a little friendly legal advice. I have a feeling any legal action on this matter would be laughed out of court, with much egg left on the Beeb's face. Might well be worth at least calling their bluff in the first instance. I think here is a number of legal eagles to be found reading these boards. Perhaps one or more of that number will chime in?

How about your Radio 3 70's predecessor's title 'Sounds Interesting', (Derek Jewell), or do they still have the rights to that!

how incredibly churlish of the BBC but at least they are staying true to form...

are they not trying to steal the name that you presumably thought up in the first place?

may I proffer Mixitmytosis?

You couldn't make it up, could you...

As for names, well - it IS Mixing It. It's an Institution, a National Monument, an Icon, a Treasure. What's another name for The Queen, or St Paul's Cathedral, or the Tate Modern?

Dunno.

MAXXING IT
Rob & Mark's (Or Mark & Rob's) Mixing It
Frog-Kissing
The Official Mixing It Tribute Band
The resonance Mix

My heart isn't in this. It's Mixing It...

Balls it out, that's my advice (if this doesn't drop resonance - or yourselves - in it). 'Having issues' with the use of the name means nothing. I have issues with the Beeb for dropping the programme in the first place. So what? They're hardly likely to do you for passing-off, or loss of profit! Presumably you had some sort of contract with the BBC. What does that say about non-competition?

Good of them not to have any objection to Mark Russell and Robert Sandall presenting a radio programme about new and experimental music. The term restraint of trade springs to mind. Sadly, the breathtaking arrogance they are showing is beginning to take away appreciation of the remaining programmes I do enjoy.

How petty! I suppose you can save yourself hassle by just calling it on air something like The Mix/Mix It! on Resonance FM and getting on with it. Depends how important the principle is (i.e.  getting the better of the BBC) - it's time consuming to say the least  Sad
