Aha, Reiner! I didn't know that - my 'rataplan' derives exclusively from the Verdi... (conceptually, at least).  Wink

Tony - as the starter of this thread you will have button "Add poll".

You might like to add a poll of "What is the first Sullivan work you would like to see played at the Royal Opera House?"

You could give us a choice of Mikardo, Yeoman, Ivanhoe, Iolanthe, etc but the task of filling up the blanks I'd rather leave to you...

Mikardo
I promise this will be my only contribution to this thread - but why is it so often spelled like that?

Ooooh, none of them, thank you! I'd prefer to see them in small/midsize venues - I think they "come off" best there Smiley

Anything that has that much dialogue really needs a smaller venue than the ROH to make its mark: I've played Despard at Buxton, which seemed to me to be about the perfect size for the audience/singer relationship which you really need if G&S is to work its magic; it's a quite different communication to that which is required for most opera, and flourishes best in more intimate surroundings.

Well I've tried to put a poll up on this thread but it doesn't work properly at all. After typing in the various options, it would not allow me to preview it so I posted it anyway. Then when it appeared some of the options didn't appear at all. That's why there's no Mikado or Yeomen option etc. I have tried to edit the poll but when I click the save button I just get a "page unavailable" error message. So I have locked the poll for the time being because it's fairly pointless without the right options.

As I believe we have now established an all-time message record for this thread in the Opera section, would be anathema to suggest running the poll as a separate posting?  Wink

Perhaps you should have tried a Pineapple Poll...

A different computer and I've now got it to work, though not without a bit of hassle. It seems it doesn't like it if you try to add more than the five options offered by default. The sixth becomes number one, which disappears. What you have to do is re-edit, then you will find six options are available, and so on. But the computer I used earlier wouldn't accept changes.

I take the points about G&S working better in smaller venues, but it has been done by the ENO at the Coliseum and by others at the Royal Albert Hall. It's just a bit of fun anyway. I can just see myself waiting by the telephone because convent Garden are looking for someone to play Robin Oakapple in their new production of Ruddigore.

Come to think of it, now that Mr Dough has confessed to playing Despard, we might put on our own production. I suggest Mabel Jane for Rose Maybud.

In case we miss Frederic's birthday, it has already been noted on the boards:
