Can I get a word in before it's locked?

I watch all this with incredulity. It's a messageboard, for heaven's sake, not an office or a job or a family where we have to see each other every day. If something annoys you a bit, just stay away from it. Only the moderators (who are pretty good, I feel) have to get involved.

We are civilised adults, aren't we?  Grin

I don't really know what you mean by "civilised", Mary, but it's a word I generally treat with some suspicion and I'm not at all sure I like it being applied to me! (This is an attempt to derail the thread, by the way, in case anyone wondered.)

Perhaps this thread could be finalised by the mods?

Let's begin anew!  Smiley

FWIW, if people want to get things off their chest about this matter then this seems to be the best place to do it. I don't think the Mods locking it would be very helpful. It might send a rather negative message to Members. Just my thoughts.

Trained-pianist's transparently attention- and sympathy-seeking behaviour, and the fact that her command of English and the coherence of what she says varies according to how put-upon she wants to look, is another example.
You can call me hopelessly naive if you like, but isn't it possible that if someone typing in a second language feels upset, down or tired, they might not think as carefully as usual about what they're typing?

For what it's worth: I'm completely in agreement with Ruby2 here. PERSONALLY (!) I'm very unhappy with the (apparently ongoing) insinuations that t-p's English is somehow a put-on. As I think I've said before, I know that my own command of the languages I'm obliged to live in (including English!) varies for all sorts of reasons. I don't see any reason why that shouldn't explain t-p's English.

Quite nice music, shame about all the pointless burblings in between.

Ollie, since we're back on this issue, I don't think the linguistic part is the only or even the main problem here. The main problems are of baiting other members, indulging in a diarrhoea of meaningless posts, constantly changing them, and inventing transparently mendacious sob stories (like the one about being hit by a bus), and I could probably think of a few more.

Besides which, I also have to do a certain amount of stuff in two foreign languages which in the heat of the moment I sometimes get mixed up with one another, but I don't think anything I might say or write in German and Dutch would ever give anyone the impression that I was putting it on, not so much because I make fewer mistakes but because it's clear that I'm actually trying to say something.

As I say, no doubt I get on some people's nerves too, and I'd hope they would tell me and get it out in the open. That's my last comment on this particular subject. I hope t-p returns and with a little more sensitivity. It really isn't such a big deal.

Another thing that's been in my mind in the past couple of days is that it's almost exactly a year since the present moderators were elected. It strikes me that it might be a very good idea to make such elections an annual matter. The present incumbents would of course be able to be reelected, and if they were that would I think defuse whatever gripes people (not me, I might add) may have about them. I might start a poll to see whether members feel this is a good idea.

Disagree entirely, richard. The "pointless burblings" are very much an essential part of the work. I hope you are not one of those folk who take their Mozart Singspiel without the spoken dialog.

Anyway, he makes far more interesting use of the inside of a piano than Taverner did in "The Whale". Wink

I don't hear them as an essential part of the work at all, and I program them out when I listen to it. That isn't to say I don't understand why they might be there, but there's much of FZ's output I find alternately fascinating and repugnant, and this is an example. I'm not big on Entführung or Zauberflöte but I like to have the words, also in Freischütz which is a favourite of mine, and (though you won't know this I think) I have also mysel written something with an extensive spoken part. What I don't like about the Zappa is that there's so much of it and it's neither connected to the music nor somehow in opposition to it.

Well I take your point Mort in a way, but it just seems now as though we're going over old ground again and again.  All that will do IMHO is just keep fuelling ill-feeling.  Don't you think it would be better dropped now?  I think everybody has said their bit and I really don't think anyone is going to come up with anything new.

At any rate, you're the boss and I'll go along with whatever is decided.  It was just a suggestion. !  Grin Kiss

Sorry for the lecture. When I come back later on I'll post something about music.  Roll Eyes[/quote

May I agree with Milly that Richard's "lecture" was spot on.

Like Robert I may be missing-out on some "game" being played here, a game for which I do not have the rules, but assuming all is as it seems may I make a couple of points. t-p seems to be a very pleasant person but someone who never stops to take breath. When she takes care she can write perfectly decent English and post interesting and sometimes amusing messages but she often seems compelled to post in haste on ever thread going, often without a very clear understanding of what is being discussed, sometimes without checking she is posting in the right place and too frequently posting pointless messages in such a rush that her English is more or less beyond understanding. This can be very annoying but not much more than that and  I would suggest our friend t-p takes a little more time in reading the posts of others and a little more thought to her own messages.Mr Grew is another kettle of fish I do not know if "Sydney Grew" is an assumed character or a genuine poster posting genuine views, in either case I find the resulting missives decidedly unpleasant . He is like an clever aristocratic Etonian school-boy sneering at the people he sees as his social and intellectual inferiors, posting messages that mix genuine facts with made-up falsehoods and gloating as other members trip-over his little land-mines, get steamed- up by his little wind-ups etc and the brighter amongst  you or those more in tune with  his "personality"you may feel the knowledge he brings to this board (bored??)  makes it worth asking him to stay. I disagree his behaviour over his "Birthday" was pretty sick.
We all have our individual problems we really should be a little kinder to each other.
My problem is that I am dyslexic and the condition has not improved with age. I have to look up most words I write and as a result some 15 posts have been sent since I started this. As a consequence I am seldom keep pace with fast-moving threads and dread ending up on the " look what he wrote" thread.  I see the discussion has moved on- To music!!! Still it's taken a time to write this so I'm posting it! Hope this is not already locked!

How can anyone get so heated up about message board life?

As an occasional visitor to this forum, and as someone who enjoys the atmosphere and expertise* here, and knowing nothing about any rows that may have occurred -- I received not a single PM  Undecided Cry Cheesy -- it’s worth keeping in mind that someone recently got themselves murdered over a message board dispute:

Quote
A German computer gamer is facing extradition to Britain, accused of murdering a student after an apparent argument on an online discussion site.

David Heiss, 21, is believed to have flown to Britain last Friday just hours before Matthew Pyke, 20, was stabbed to death in his Nottingham flat.

Mr Pyke’s bloodstained body was found by his girlfriend, Joanna Witton, 20. The couple met Mr Heiss online earlier this year through a website they ran devoted to Advance Wars, a chess-like war strategy game.

Source

I also know of another site where real life fisticuffs occurred last year over an online dispute. A group of people tracked someone down and administered, in effect, a punishment beating for views expressed online.

So while good people leaving is always a shame, R3OK is one of the most civilized (sorry Richard) and enjoyable online communities around. It’s worth keeping that in mind before anyone beats themselves up too much over any recent drama. Sure, people will row occasionally, but as long as no one’s murdered or assaulted or horribly libeled, it’s par for the course.

* There are several Proms I went to this year where my enjoyment was increased, before, during and afterwards, by material I read on R3OK. So this site’s a gem.

One pleasure of this board, and indeed TOP when I first discovered it, was interacting with people with whom I have little in common, and sometimes managing to have friendly exchanges with someone who may have irritated me or had opposing views to myself.

I am not a very sociable person and very reluctant to risk controversy or rejection in face to face meetings. Here I am able to do so.

We all put forward a persona in order to relate to others - it's the only way we can.  It is only when that becomes manipulative that it is a problem.

I think Ted is offering tp good advice in a kind and wise spirit.  I hope she will not mind.

I wondered about Tony Watson, and had often noticed his last post for some explanation of his absence.  I am sorry not to see him around.

Regular elections are generally considered good for the democratic health of organisations.

Precisely.  And I'm sure she won't mind at all!   Now let's please call an end to it all.  Nobody needs to leave, nobody needs to resign. Nobody needs to back down.  Let it go!  Let it die a natural death. Let's just forget it?  Pleeeeeeeeeese.  Sad
